MOTHERS

"With the power of motherhood within her,
a woman can influence the entire world.
The love of awakened motherhood is
a love and compassion
felt not only toward one's own children,
but toward all people, animals, plants, rocks and rivers--
a love extended to all beings...
It is not restricted to women who have given birth;
it is a principle inherent in both women and men.
It is an attitude of the mind.
It is love - and that love is the very breath of life. "

SCULPTURAL NATURE WEAVINGS

We decided to use chicken wire as the base in our nature weavings instead of the forked sticks that we usually use. You can see the forked stick weavings here.

The children explored and collected bits of nature for their weavings.

The pieces of chicken wire were about twelve by seventeen inches. The children could bend them into any shape they wanted and fill and weave with nature. There are plenty of empty spaces to add any nature they might find in the future.

Beautiful nature art! They can be free standing on a table or shelf or hung on a wall.

 happy day! happy weaving!

NATURE JOURNALING . . .

It isn't about being an artist.
It is about connecting with the natural world.

It is drawing what you see.

It is using all your senses to create.

It is finding peace, appreciation . . .
and amazement . . . in the simple.

It is a record of your journey.

 How do you do it?
It's simple and easy.
Gather a sketchbook, a pencil or gel pen, colored pencils, and a magnifying glass.
You might want watercolors, a brush and water too.
Then go outdoors, find something that catches your eye, and start. Don't be afraid of the blank page.

                            Just draw what you see.

happy day!

CHILDREN AND CHICKENS

There is a special connection between children and chickens; toddlers to teens. They love to catch them, hold them and toss them special treats.

A sweet grandbaby has seen me open the bird feeder, time and time again, to get some sunflower seeds for the hens. This time she did it all by herself.  I happened to glance out the window.
She clearly knew what she was doing.
She remembered to pinch the back of the feeder so it would open and dug her fingers deep into the Black oil sunflower seeds.
See the hens waiting patiently?

They knew what she was after and they were happy.
She loves to feed the chickens, but loves catching and holding them more. And she is getting quite good at it.

Perhaps you can find a chicken to love!

happy day!

PHOTO CHALLENGE - BIRD

A new visitor arrived at our pond early this evening. I ran back to get my camera.

On closer inspection, I realized he was with a friend. They swam further away when they saw me.

I sat and watched awhile and was happy I did. . .
because soon they took flight.

It's the little unexpected treasures that come upon us. . .  that make life so worth living.

WORDS

A quote for Monday . . .
“I sincerely believe that for the child, and for the parent seeking to guide him, it is not half so important to know as to feel when introducing a young child to the natural world. If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil.”  -Rachel Carson

HAPPY EARTH DAY

Make every day Earth Day . . .

Take the time to marvel . . .
in the beauty of all living things.

Be inspired by what is all around you.

Reflect on your life and your world
and decide how you can make a difference.

Relish in the quietness and the wildness . . .
 seeking solace, inspiration and joy.

Delight in the small things . . .

and show a child the true meaning of wealth.

                             Dare . . .

                                     to care.
