Pysanky is the ancient Eastern European art of egg decorating, often called Ukrainian egg decorating. Detailed directions are here.
Do you know how to blow out an egg?
There are great directions here. We used this gadget from Hearthsong.
We used our large duck eggs in the past but have no female duck this year.
First, you make a design on the blown out egg shell
For our hard boiled eggs, we plan to use all natural dyes using:
- beets for red,
- tumeric for yellow,
- red cabbage for blue,
- frozen blueberries for purple, from the recipes here and here.
I especially love the results from the eggs wrapped in onion skins.

Those eggs are SPECTACULAR! And how satisfying to have Easter eggs from your very own hens. I look forward to attempting that ourselves. Oh, wait, that is not going to work at all because we didn't have the foresight to save the white eggs. Ah well, maybe next year. Thanks for the gorgeous inspiration!

Remember...you can do the pysanky eggs at any time...it's a cool art project...and just put them away until you want to decorate with them or keep them out all the time.
I have a friend who keeps some in a glass cabinet all year round. They last because the egg contents have been blown out. Of course it's another story with the hard boiled eggs hahahaha.
The pysanky can still work with brownish eggs too !
To make the designs on the eggs, you can use ready made patterns, anything around the house to trace, or have an extremely talented and creative daughter who is amazing at lettering and fine detail (and who works st graphic design in Boston!) :)

My mom made these each year while I was growing up. I love them. Your designs are beautiful. I have been wanting to begin the tradition in our family... but may need to wait another year until I have a bit more time. Thank you for sharing!

Your eggs are gorgeous. You did a great job. This brought back so many memories of when I was a child. I haven't done onion skin egg dying in years. I think I'll have to bring it back.
